FOCUS ON ELNA SERGERS

EL664ProWe have 3 wonderful ELNA sergers to offer customers in Canada looking for reliable and easy-to-use sergers. All 3 sergers are 4 thread sergers. Please click on the link for each to see the downloadable brochures. The links give clear information about the features on these sergers and the differences between the 664 & 664PRO.

I simply do not know how I ever existed before I invested in a simple 4 thread serger  almost 2 decades ago!! I still have that serger but realized after a few years that I really did need a serger with a differential feed and the ability to adjust my cutting width. Why?

Well, differential feed allows you to adjust the speed at which the feed dogs feed the fabric through the serger. if you have a stretchy knit, for example, and you do not adjust the differential feed, there is a tendency for the fabric to stretch as it goes through the serger. Guess what results: stretched seams that curve & wave. Not pretty. But if you speed up the differential feed, the fabric feeds faster through the serger and the seams stay nice and flat with no waves!  However, if you wish to create a nice curly lettuce leaf edge to a sleeve or hemline, simply slow down the differential feed and what results is a slight stretching of the fabric as it goes through the serger. This gives a pretty edge finish.  SO, lots of possibilities that my original serger did not allow me to have.

Cutting width adjustment is also very handy indeed. This allows you to move the position at which the upper & lower blades cut the fabric edge as you serge. So if you find that the seam is rolling or curling inside the serged seam, this indicates the cutting width was too wide and needs to be reduced so that more fabric is cut off and what remains lies flat inside the stitching. (see below)

Conversely, it the stitches sort of “hang off” the edge of the cut fabric, then the cutting width is too narrow and too much fabric was cut. It needs to be adjusted to trim away a little less fabric so that once more the fabric lies flat inside the serged seam. (see below)

ALL the sergers listed above offer both cutting width adjustment and differential feed.

These are just 2 reasons for buying and using a serger. There are many more………see your local ELNA dealer today to find out more about how a serger can revolutionize your sewing and make garment construction as well as home decorating and other projects SO much more professional.

Remember that a serger is much quicker & neater than sewing a seam & then having to sew it all over again to neaten the seam raw edges. A serger does it all in one for you as well as trimming the raw edge beautifully neat & straight!
