This was my 4th year attending part of the SASKATCHEWAN STITCHES CONFERENCE and this year happened to be a special one: it was the 1oth ANNIVERSARY of the Conference.

The Conference is arranged and hosted by Wendy and her very able staff at HAUS OF STITCHES in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Wendy has a store in the main street of Humboldt (you should be sure to pop in there if you are in the area) but the Conference is actually held about 10-15 minutes away at St Peter’s Abbey, Muenster which is a Monastery and is also a college: St Peter’s College. We held our classes mostly in the newly renovated and completed building so it was just wonderful: spacious and most comfortable.

One of the big highlights of this year’s Conference was the Challenge. Wendy Toye, owner of Haus of Stitches, had challenged us all last year to buy a specific fabric in one of 2 different colourways and make anything to enter in this year’s Challenge Contest. Wendy had some GREAT prizes including an EL740 for the Viewer’s Choice Award.  See pics below.

This was my entry called “Passage to India”….no big surprize that the fabric “Jewels of India” spoke to me of bejewelled Rajah’s palaces & elephants!

The only other entry from one of the teachers was from Beverley Johnson who teaches bra-making. Her quilt was simply TOO clever for words – she designed a stained glass circular wall quilt with shapes that looked suspiciously like bra cups, corsets & panties. Needless to say, Beverly won a prize in the popular vote section. Here she is receiving her award from Wendy of Haus of Stitches

Can you spot the underwear???!!!

Talking of “underwear”: this entry by Kimberly Hamilton of Edmonton won in the garment section for this bustier made with the same Jewels of India fabric. Beautifully made and I can envision it looking GREAT worn with a pair of jeans or with a sexy skirt ……far too nice to hide away under a blouse.

The entry that won the popular vote/Viewer’s Choice was Annette Schultz’s quilt she called “Jewels of the Night”.  Congratulations, Annette……she gets to go home with a brand new EL740 as her prize. We KNOW you are going to just love sewing on this incredible machine. Well done!

Wendy and Annette pose next to the winning quilt and with her new EL740!!!

I was one of the 4 judges and we had the very difficult task of awarding the prizes for the various categories. It was a difficult task as the entries were of a really high standard and SO many of them were really good.  WELL DONE to EVERY ONE who entered ……it was a really exciting exercise to see all the many different ways people created with the same fabric. Wendy……can we maybe have another Challenge next year??????? It was SO much fun. The entries are currently on show in Wendy’s store in Humboldt and will move soon to their local Humboldt Museum until September.

Thank you to Peggy Gwillim who took the photographs and found time in her busy schedule to send some to me for this blog. Thanks – see you on my next visit to SK!

BE VERY SURE YOU DO NOT MISS OUT ON ALL THE FUN NEXT YEAR: The Saskatchewan Stitches Conference 2013 will be held from May 30- June 9th . Be sure to visit the Haus of Stitches website or call the store well ahead of time to get informed and sign up for classes…..see you there!!!
